The Twelve Days of Springtime: A School Counting Book
The Twelve Days of Springtime: A School Counting Book is a colorful, entertaining and educational book that is perfect for children between the ages of 4 years old and 8 years old. This is a big book that measures 10.9 x 9.8 x 0.5 inches and has 32 pages by Deborah Lee Rose and illustrated by Carey Armstrong-Ellis.
You'll never look at springtime in the same way after reading this book. You'll never look at teachers in the same way either! Told in the cadence of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," the story follows a rambunctious kindergarten class and their well-meaning teacher on a series of field trips to celebrate spring's arrival. Two turtle ponds, three tree seedlings, four ladybugs, and five gold stars (daffodils) later, the kids are in the groove of springtime fun. Each page is filled with hilarious treats to discover and admire: a groundhog dislodges each new seeding; a tank of tadpoles peers through the glass at the boy peering through his glasses at them; and a flock of chickens chase a little red-haired boy. This is a charming book that young readers will enjoy time and again. - Connie Goldsmith, Children's Book Reviewer for California Kids, a Sacramento regional parenting publication.
Review of The Twelve Days of Springtime: A School Counting Book
"On the twelfth day of springtime, / my teacher gave to me / TWELVE flags for flapping, / eleven stones for stepping, / ten words for rhyming, / . . . / and a garden to water carefully." One increasingly frazzled teacher leads her class through a variety of activities, some specifically seasonal, some not, to the familiar tune. The humor's all in Armstrong-Ellis's illustrations, which depict a rambunctious, multi-ethnic classroom full of kids and their valiant teacher, who is no Ms Frizzle. Each page turn shows her eyes getting wider and wider behind their horn-rims as her kids take every activity she presents them and turn it into happy chaos. Readers will get an enormous kick out of seeing what they do in each busy spread, and they won't care if the scansion sometimes stutters. (Picture book. 4-8) --Kirkus Reviews
