Question: Would buying toys in English and Spanish confuse my child?
I have a baby and I want him to be exposed to, and learn both English and Spanish. My family speaks only English, although I speak spanish, and his fathers family speak Spanish. I've read conflicting articles where they say you should teach them one language first and others where they say you could teach a baby both at the same time. I've bought him some learning toys that teach him the alphabet and numbers, etc., and a couple of them are in Spanish. Will it confuse him if I let him play with toys that speak 2 different languages?
Answer: I have friends who are missionaries to Mexico. When they moved there, they had a 5 year old boy and a 2 year old girl. They later had another daughter born in Mexico. The children are all teens now.
The boy speaks perfect English and speaks Spanish with an English accent.
The girl born in Mexico speaks perfect Spanish and speaks English with a Spanish accent.
The girl who moved there at age 2 speaks perfect English and perfect Spanish with no trace of an accent in either language.I don't think your child will be confused. In fact, it's easier for a baby to learn 2 languages at once, because they don't know that most people only learn one.

Answer: There is no precise answer to that question because languages evolve very similarly to biological organisms. The farther back you go the less recognizable both these languages are to their present-day forms, and it is quite arbitrary when to call an ancestral language by its modern name.
Spanish started as Latin brought by Roman settlers to the Iberian Peninsula mixed with whatever local tongues were already being spoken there. English has both Latin and Celtic origins. Which came 'first' is a matter of opinion only.
