Question: What is the conflict in Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea?
Hey guys, any help would be great. I have a lot of conflicts in mind such as the battle with the giant squid, the men trying to escape and a few others. Could you please help me with the conflict and write a little bit for it please? Thanks in advance.
Answer: The main conflict is between Capt. Nemo and "that hated nation," whose ships he rams and sinks. In recent years, people have read in Jules Verne's publisher's files that the "hated nation" was Russia, and that Capt. Nemo was a Pole who was avenging his country for suppressing Polish uprisings in 1830 and 1848. The publisher urged Verne to leave that part out of the book so not to offend readers anywhere.
When people speak of conflict in a novel, they mean something more basic than squids and volcanoes.
