I am really uncomfortable with the idea of banning any book. It just isn't a reasonable way to exist in a world that should encourage freedom. If I want the freedom to write and read whatever I want to, then others should have the freedom to write and read whatever they want to.I think this book is probably more violent than it could be for the younger set. I think it should be put in with the older children's books. Does that mean it shouldn't be available to younger children? No. I'm not even talking top shelf or anything like that. It will be just as available amongst the other books, just not as likely to scare an unsuspecting youngster.
If a parent has a problem with a particular book, I think that parent has a right to request that their child not have access to the book. I'm not sure it is convenient to limit access in that way, but it's worth a talk with the librarian or principal if a parent has a concern.
