Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien, of course, but also Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and perhaps even Wagner in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords... |

Question: Would the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini be a good book if...?
Hi! Would the book Eragon by Christopher Paolini be a good book if the author didn't rip off Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and other fantasy/science fiction elements that have already been used in previous books? First of all, let me just say that I've never read Eragon, but I have heard that it is a ripoff. However, if Christopher used his own ideas, would the book be a good read? Is Christopher a good writer? Please no answers such as "You idiot, Eragon rocks!!!!!!!!!!!" Thank you very much.
Answer: I'm an avid reader of fantasy and have been since before Christopher Paolini's parents were born. I enjoyed Eragon and Eldest and have ordered Brisingr. The writing improved as the books progressed which isn't surprising considering how young the author was when Eragon was written. He's not a wonderful writer, but his books are entertaining and they're good reads.
Anyone who says that the books have nothing to offer because they use elements common to other books obviously isn't much of a fantasy reader. Lord of the Rings was an original but since then, most fantasy books have a number of recurrent themes and anyone who says otherwise obviously hasn't read many fantasy books. You'll also find that dyed in the wool LOTR fans are a bit precious about the books.
Just because a story includes dragons, a quest, mentors, dwarves, elves, battles, magic in one combination or another, it isn't a ripoff if the overall plot and the melding of the various elements is original and entertaining and if the author has incorporated original ideas of his own. What more do you want? If we stop reading fantasy books because they re-use fiction elements that have previously been used, we wouldn't have much to read in the genre and would miss many enjoyable hours of entertainment.
When you've finished the Inheritance cycle, do yourself a favor and read the Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory. You find many of the same elements in there too, but you'll see that it's how authors put them together that matters. They're much better plotted than the Inheritance books and the writing is vastly superior.
EDIT:
Redunicorn - a ripoff of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series?? What?? It has absolutely NOTHING in common with that series except that they both have creatures called dragons. Paolini's dragons are magical creatures and McCaffreys are genetically engineered creatures of science fiction, not fantasy. And the two series have nothing else in common at all. While I'm on the subject of whether the books are ripoffs or not, I have to say that they have nothing in common with Star Wars either, regardless of anything Paolini may have said about being influenced by Star Wars. The two series are chalk and cheese. Star Wars itself is the ultimate ripoff as far as the SW books are concerned - entertaining movies, but the books are very ordinary and they're not the work of a single imaginative author but arise from a strange symbiotic relationship with the movies as the catalyst rather than the reverse as is usual. I know for certain that the first Star Wars book was written after the first movie to capitalize on its success.
